Apresiasi ini merupakan pemilihan perusahaan asuransi terbaik menurut Warta Ekonomi serta para konsumen atas kinerja mereka selama satu tahun terakhir.
Dalam melakukan penilaian penghargaan Indonesia Insurance Consumer Choice Award 2017, Warta Ekonomi Intelligence Unit (WEIU) melakukan dua pendekatan yaitu desk research dan quantitative survey. Desk research dilakukan dengan memisahkan perusahaan asuransi menjadi tiga kategori yaitu perusahaan asuransi umum, asuransi jiwa, dan reasuransi.
Penilaian desk research dilakukan melalui pendekatan analisa laporan keuangan. Warta Ekonomi tidak memasukkan perusahaan asuransi yang tidak mengeluarkan laporan keuangan, perusahaan asuransi yang sedang dalam pembekuan kegiatan usaha, perusahaan asuransi yang dicabut izin usahanya, serta perusahaan asuransi yang sedang terkena kasus kejahatan lainnya.
Selain penghargaan berdasarkan pendekatan laporan keuangan 2015-2016, Warta Ekonomi juga melakukan riset kuantitatif dengan metode telephone survey, menggunakan kuesioner terstruktur terhadap responden yang merupakan nasabah pemegang polis dari berbagai perusahaan asuransi dan sudah memiliki polis selama minimal satu tahun.
